EU to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova as UN reports civilian casualty surge

Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that May 2026 saw the highest number of civilian casualties in the country in four years, attributing the increase to Russian aggression. Additionally, the United States reportedly plans to significantly reduce its military aircraft and warships allocated for NATO operations in Europe. European officials have expressed concerns that this reduction could impact NATO's long-range strike and reconnaissance capabilities.
