Ukraine reports rising casualties in Sumy, ongoing frontline clashes, and potential Russian offensive

Ukraine updated casualty figures from a Sumy attack and reported a drone strike in Kherson. Frontline clashes continued, and Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi warned of a potential Russian offensive towards Chernihiv and Kyiv.

Casualties from a Russian guided aerial bomb attack on an infrastructure facility in Sumy have risen to 21, with two individuals hospitalized and 14 undergoing medical examination. Separately, a Russian drone strike on a minibus in Kherson on July 1 killed two people, including an 18-year-old, and injured nine others. On June 30, Ukrainian forces engaged in 203 combat clashes across the front lines, including 25 in the Pokrovsk sector, with the enemy conducting 51 air strikes and deploying 163 guided aerial bombs. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reiterated the realistic threat of a Russian offensive into the Chernihiv region from Bryansk Oblast. He also noted President Vladimir Putin's instruction to his General Staff to "calculate various options for conducting an offensive operation, including from the territory of Belarus with the aim of capturing Kyiv and other territories." Throughout June, Russia reportedly targeted ten civilian sites, including historical locations, a film studio, and residential areas, with over half sustaining damage.

Starlink challenges EU policy on satellite-to-smartphone communications

Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has formally challenged a new European Union policy aimed at bolstering Europe's sovereignty in direct satellite-to-smartphone communications, submitting a four-page note to the European Commission.

Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has formally challenged a new European Union policy aimed at bolstering Europe's sovereignty in direct satellite-to-smartphone communications. In late June, the American constellation provider submitted a four-page note to the European Commission, expressing strong opposition to measures that would favor European satellite operators in this rapidly developing "direct-to-device" (D2D) technology sector. The EU's initiative seeks to promote domestic constellations for these strategic communications, a move Starlink views as restrictive towards non-European entities. This technology allows direct mobile connectivity via satellite, bypassing traditional ground infrastructure.
