Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, has formally challenged a new European Union policy aimed at bolstering Europe's sovereignty in direct satellite-to-smartphone communications. In late June, the American constellation provider submitted a four-page note to the European Commission, expressing strong opposition to measures that would favor European satellite operators in this rapidly developing "direct-to-device" (D2D) technology sector. The EU's initiative seeks to promote domestic constellations for these strategic communications, a move Starlink views as restrictive towards non-European entities. This technology allows direct mobile connectivity via satellite, bypassing traditional ground infrastructure.
