Zaporizhzhia plant loses external power amid new sanctions and Ukrainian strikes

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant lost external power, raising IAEA concerns, while 50,000 in the region faced outages. President Zelensky backed strikes on Russian oil sites, and the EU unveiled new sanctions.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant recently experienced a complete loss of external power, prompting the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to express concerns about "permanent dangers to nuclear safety." Concurrently, approximately 50,000 individuals in the Zaporizhzhia region were reported to be without electricity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his support for recent attacks on Russian oil and military sites, describing them as retaliatory actions and stating, "We continue to apply Ukrainian sanctions." These strikes included targets in Russia's Tatarstan, Bryansk, and Samara regions, specifically aiming at oil refineries. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed President Zelensky's anticipated attendance at the G7 summit. Separately, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen introduced the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, asserting that "Our sanctions are working."
