Additionally, 157 people are reported missing. This marks a significant rise from previous counts, which initially reported 32 deaths and over 700 injuries, then 164 fatalities and nearly 1,000 injured. The seismic activity, described by residents as the most violent in 126 years, caused extensive damage, including the collapse of the Maiqueta airport roof. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) had expressed concerns about a "heavy" human toll and "significant" material damage.
