Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, June 24, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The first tremor, measuring magnitude 7.2, occurred at a depth of 21.9 kilometers, approximately 200 kilometers west of the capital, Caracas. A second, stronger quake of magnitude 7.5 followed, originating at a depth of 10 kilometers. The USGS has expressed concerns about a "heavy" human toll and "significant" material damage resulting from the seismic activity.
