Kyiv death toll rises to 21 after extensive Russian attack

Kyiv's death toll from Russia's July 2 missile and drone assault has risen to 21, with 85 injured. Earlier reports cited 18 fatalities. A separate strike in Dnipropetrovsk killed a 7-year-old. The EU pledges more sanctions and aid.

Emergency services in Kyiv have updated the death toll from Russia's July 2 missile and drone assault to 21, with 85 people, including two children, sustaining injuries. This follows an attack involving 74 missiles and 496 uncrewed aerial vehicles, primarily targeting the capital. Earlier reports from the prosecutor's office and some emergency service accounts indicated 18 fatalities. Significant damage was reported across all Kyiv districts, notably a residential building in Darnytskyi. Separately, a guided aerial bomb strike in the Dnipropetrovsk region killed a 7-year-old girl and injured four others, including an 11-year-old. The European Union reiterated its commitment to increased sanctions on Moscow and continued military support, focusing on air defense and drones. European diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas stated, "Only sustained military support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Moscow can do that."
