Venezuela earthquake death toll rises as concerns grow over missing and disease

Venezuela's earthquake death toll has climbed to 1,719, with 5,034 injured and 50,000 missing. The WHO warns of disease outbreaks and inadequate victim tracking amidst ongoing rescue efforts.

The death toll from Venezuela's June 24 double earthquake has risen to 1,719, with 5,034 people injured, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced on June 29. Rodriguez had previously characterized the event as "the most brutal natural disaster that our country has suffered in its entire history." The United Nations estimates approximately 50,000 individuals are missing. On June 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concerns about potential disease outbreaks and deemed the registration of victims and tracking of missing persons inadequate. Rescue operations are ongoing amidst increasing public frustration regarding the government's response. The seismic activity has also resulted in 774 buildings being affected or collapsed, with 189 completely destroyed.
