Ukraine faces continued attacks as EU prepares new sanctions

Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region endured 884 Russian attacks, causing two deaths and 38 injuries, as the EU prepares its 21st sanctions package targeting third-country financial institutions aiding Russian banks.
Russian forces conducted 884 attacks on 46 settlements in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region over the past day, resulting in two fatalities and 38 injuries in Zaporizhzhia city and district. Meanwhile, the European Commission is set to introduce its 21st package of sanctions against Russia this week, targeting financial institutions in third countries, particularly in Central Asia, for allegedly assisting Russian banks in circumventing existing restrictions. A US representative to the UN reiterated that Russia's invasion of Ukraine constitutes a "strategic failure." Separately, further allegations have emerged regarding the involvement of Rosatom employees in the occupation of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. In other global news, a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines, leading to at least 19 deaths, over 200 injuries, and a one-meter tsunami.
