Greece introduces new regulations for beach commercialization

Greece has implemented new regulations concerning beach commercialization, aiming to address overtourism and protect coastal areas. This move follows local protests, such as on Koufonissia, where the government reversed permits for beach bars after community opposition.

Greece has implemented new regulations concerning beach commercialization, aiming to address overtourism and protect coastal areas. This move follows local protests, such as on Koufonissia, where the government reversed permits for beach bars after community opposition. Effective May 1st, commercial exploitation is now prohibited on 198 designated 'sensitive' beaches. For other beaches, new rules mandate that at least 50% of the area must remain free of commercial activity, and 50% of commercially used sections must be publicly accessible. Additionally, minimum distances between umbrellas are enforced, and penalties for violations have been increased. Sources: Le Monde
