Global death penalty congress meets amid record executions

The 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty convenes in Paris from June 30 to July 2, bringing together global stakeholders. Despite more countries abolishing capital punishment, global executions reached a 40-year high in 2025.

The 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty is set to take place in Paris from June 30 to July 2. The event will bring together activists, lawyers, politicians, and representatives from nations that still retain capital punishment. Despite a growing number of countries abolishing the death penalty, with 114 out of 199 now abolitionist, global executions have reached a record high. In 2025, 2,707 executions were recorded outside of China, marking the highest figure since 1981. This paradox highlights the ongoing challenges in achieving a world free from capital punishment.
