European Commission proposes new Russia sanctions and Germany boosts Ukraine aid
The European Commission unveiled its 21st sanctions package against Russia, proposing an EU entry ban for Russian military personnel and targeting key sectors. Germany also pledged an additional €300 million for Ukraine's ammunition supply.
The European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen, presented its 21st package of sanctions against Russia on June 9. A central proposal within these measures is an entry ban to the European Union for all Russian military personnel who have served since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Von der Leyen emphasized, "Europe is closed to all who participated in the invasion of Ukraine." The new restrictions also target Russia's energy, financial services, cryptocurrencies, trade, and fishing sectors. Concurrently, Germany announced an additional €300 million contribution to the Czech initiative aimed at supplying ammunition to Ukraine. This funding is expected to procure approximately 50,000 rounds, with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius underscoring the initiative's significance.
