EU to launch accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova amid reports of high civilian casualties and US military reduction

The EU will officially launch accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on June 15, opening the 'Foundations' cluster. Meanwhile, a UN report noted the highest civilian casualties in Ukraine in four years for May 2026, and the US plans to reduce its military assets for NATO

The European Union is set to officially commence accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on June 15, initiating the "Foundations" cluster which addresses rule of law, public administration, and democratic governance. This development was confirmed by the Cypriot Presidency of the EU Council. Concurrently, a UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission report revealed that May 2026 recorded the highest civilian casualties in Ukraine in four years, attributed to ongoing Russian aggression. Separately, the United States reportedly intends to significantly decrease the number of military aircraft and warships it provides for NATO operations in Europe. European officials voiced apprehension that this reduction could impair NATO's long-range strike and reconnaissance capabilities. Sources: Громадське, Українська правда
