Stratospheric Microballoons Over Poland: NATO Tests Future Technologies

At the turn of July and August, American stratospheric microballoons will appear over Poland. The Operational Command of the Armed Forces assures that the mission is defensive and exploratory in nature, but urges the public not to touch any objects that could fall to the ground.
The facilities are part of training by the US Multi-Domain Command in Europe, conducted as part of strengthening interoperability with NATO. These exercises are consistent with the concept of multi-domain operations, which combines various operational areas into a single system – from land forces and air forces to space and cyberspace. Poland has been a key partner of the Alliance in this context for years, participating in numerous exercises developing cooperation on the eastern flank.
As noted in the press release, the flights will be conducted "in Polish airspace in accordance with applicable regulations and in close coordination with institutions responsible for airspace security and management in the Warsaw FIR (EPWW)."

NATO Tests New Capabilities
These unmanned aerial platforms are used, among other things, to perform military tasks, primarily related to surveillance and reconnaissance.
This training is intended to test new detection and communication technologies that may support multi-domain operations (MDO) in the future.
This modern military concept assumes close cooperation between various branches of the armed forces. The Army, Air Force, Navy, and units operating in cyberspace and outer space exchange information, coordinate operations, and jointly respond to threats. This approach allows for faster decision-making and increased effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
What are stratospheric microballoons?
Stratospheric microballoons, also known as Micro High-Altitude Balloons (Micro-HABs), are advanced airborne platforms used for various types of research and testing. They are used, among other things, in: They are used to analyze the chemical composition of the atmosphere, monitor climate and meteorological phenomena, and test space technologies and telecommunications systems (for example, they are used to deliver internet to hard-to-reach regions of the world).
However, these platforms also have a wide range of military and defense applications. In this context, they enable the testing of detection and communication technologies, as well as the verification of advanced surveillance systems. In the case of current operations, the US Army is also examining how microballoons can support and coordinate operations conducted simultaneously on land, in the air, in space, and even in cyberspace.
This is not the first time such platforms have appeared in Europe. In April 2026, they were used in the Arcane Thunder 26 exercise, conducted simultaneously in Poland, Germany, and the United States. In May, tests took place in the Baltic Sea region – the platforms were launched in Sweden and then recovered in Latvia.
The military appeals: do not touch!
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces assures that the activities do not pose a threat to residents and will not affect daily operations. However, they warn that if platform components are found, do not touch them or attempt to secure them yourself. Such a discovery must be reported to the appropriate authorities.
The microballoons themselves do not pose a threat, but platforms used for defensive purposes may contain electronic components, power systems, or other components requiring appropriate protection.
The potential impact of some components on the environment cannot be ruled out.
At this time, it is not known exactly on which days or over which regions of Poland the microballoons will be visible.
