Scorched Harvest: Record Heatwaves Wipe Out €2 Billion from Europe’s Grain Economy

Across the agricultural heartlands of Western and Central Europe, a brutal summer is taking a devastating economic toll. An intense, record-breaking heatwave in June has severely scorched crops during critical stages of biological development, wiping an estimated €2 billion (£1.7 billion) from the value of European grain production.
New analyses based on revised harvest forecasts by the European grain trade association Coceral and the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) reveal that nearly 9 million metric tonnes were erased from European Union and UK grain expectations in a matter of weeks. The shortfall marks one of the most severe climate-driven agricultural setbacks of the decade, raising immediate concerns over food price inflation and regional security.
A Critical Blow at the Worst Possible Time
The timing of the heatwave proved catastrophic for arable farming. Temperatures soaring well above 38°C to 40°C swept across France, Spain, Germany, and Hungary just as crops reached their most vulnerable growth phases.
Maize was struck during its crucial pollination window, while wheat and barley suffered during "grain fill"—a delicate development stage where plants require consistent soil moisture to plump out grains. Without adequate moisture, crops withered on the stem, forcing many farmers to harvest early or cut heat-stressed crops for livestock fodder before they could even mature.
Overall, the combined grain loss across the EU and the UK—equivalent to the entire annual grain production of Austria, Ireland, and the Netherlands combined—is expected to result in the smallest European harvest since 2018.

Regional Disasters
France and Hungary hit hardest. While the impact was felt across the continent, France—Europe's agricultural powerhouse—bore the heaviest financial blow. The French grain harvest was downgraded by over 4 million tonnes, representing a staggering loss of €891 million in revenue. The country's maize production was falled to its lowest levels in decades as non-irrigated fields buckled under weeks of scorching heat.
Similarly, wheat yields in Poland, Europe’s third-largest grain grower, are poised to drop by as much as a fifth from last year’s record levels, though they will still be in line with the long-term average, according to Infograin, a Warsaw-based market researcher.
Romania, Europe’s fourth-largest grain producer, is poised to have the “best year in history” for wheat, barley and rapeseed after rains in the past three months helped keep soils moist, said Cezar Gheorghe at grains consultant Agricolumn.
Bulgaria’s wheat harvest may be a record, according to brokerage Agricore.
Hungary lost 2.4 million tonnes of grain, incurring an estimated €444 million in damages.
The Spanish grain harvest was downgraded by a 1.4 million tonne reduction, valued at €276 million.
Germany saw production estimates drop by 1.4 million tonnes, costing farmers €233 million.
British farmers are reporting dry conditions across much of the UK following the June heatwave and a dry spring, although this has been felt most acutely in East Anglia and parts of south-east England, with regional variations expected.
The €2 billion figure accounts solely for arable grain losses such as wheat, barley, and maize. Environmental analysts warn that the total economic fallout will be significantly higher once losses in livestock, fruit, and vegetable farming are factored in.
Global Implications and Food Price Pressures
The sudden contraction of European supply comes at a delicate time for global commodity markets. With global grain reserves already tightening due to severe drought in parts of the United States and ongoing geopolitical tensions, Europe will be forced to increase its reliance on foreign grain imports.
Analysts note that this shortfall will inevitably exert upward pressure on wholesale commodity markets, threatening to trigger a fresh wave of food price inflation for consumers heading into late 2026 and 2027.
For European farmers, the disaster underscores a stark reality: traditional adaptation methods are failing to keep pace with rapid climate change. As extreme heatwaves transition from rare anomalies to seasonal norms, the agricultural sector faces a structural shift. Without systemic investments in climate-resilient farming, soil restoration, and aggressive emissions reductions, Europe’s food security will remain increasingly vulnerable to an overheating planet.
