Murder investigation launched after man found dead near stone circle following solstice gathering

A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 26-year-old man was found at a prehistoric stone circle in England’s Peak District following gatherings for the summer solstice.
Police in Derbyshire said the victim was discovered on Monday afternoon at Nine Ladies Stone Circle in Stanton Lees, near Darley Dale, a Bronze Age monument dating back around 3,000 to 4,000 years. Officers said the man was killed “in the most brutal way”, though they have not yet formally identified him.
A 41-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. No charges have yet been brought.
The discovery came in the days after celebrations marking the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, when the site is known to attract visitors, including pagan and druid groups as well as tourists. Police said they believe a significant number of people were in and around the area between Friday and Tuesday and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with footage or information to come forward.
Det Insp Tony Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said officers were working to establish a clear timeline of events and described the killing as deeply concerning for those who were present at the site over the weekend.
He said: “We know that people have been coming and going from the area over the course of the weekend… it is vital that anyone who was in attendance at any point over the weekend speaks to officers.”
The victim’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, Derbyshire Police said.
Nine Ladies Stone Circle is part of a wider complex of ancient standing stones on Stanton Moor. Local folklore says the circle represents nine women turned to stone as punishment for dancing on a Sunday, while another nearby monolith is linked to a myth about a petrified musician.
The site is a regular focus for solstice gatherings, which this year took place on 21 June. Police said additional patrols would remain in the area in the coming days as the investigation continues.
