Godzilla Franchise Star Kaylee Hottle Dies at 18 in a Car Accident

According to local law enforcement, the collision occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m. when a 1995 Honda Accord ran off the roadway and struck a concrete culvert. Hottle, who was traveling as a passenger alongside another individual, was airlifted to a nearby trauma center.

Her father, Joshua Hottle, later shared that her heart stopped during transport, and emergency medical personnel were unable to revive her.

The driver, a local man aged 19,  was taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, while the other passenger "declined medical treatment at the scene".

Authorities believe excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

A Historic Moment for Deaf Representation in Hollywood

Born into a multigenerational Deaf family, Hottle grew up in Austin, Texas, where she was a native user of American Sign Language (ASL). She was a high school senior at the Texas School for the Deaf at the time of her death.

Hottle captured worldwide attention at just nine years old when she made her feature film debut in Godzilla vs. Kong. Cast as Jia, a young orphaned girl from Skull Island, Hottle anchored the film’s emotional center through her character’s unique bond with King Kong—communicating with the giant titan almost entirely through sign language.

Her casting represented a milestone for authentic accessibility and representation in blockbuster filmmaking.

On-Set Inclusivity

Rather than relying on non-deaf actors or CGI, director Adam Wingard insisted on casting a deaf actor who could bring genuine cultural nuance to the screen.

Kaylee co-stars, including Alexander Skarsgård and Rebecca Hall, learned basic ASL on set to facilitate communication both on and off camera.

Hottle reprised her role in the 2024 blockbuster sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.

Beyond her work in the MonsterVerse, Hottle also appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and had recently completed filming on the upcoming independent feature What Doesn't Kill Us.

News of Hottle's passing prompted a wave of emotional tributes from family, castmates, and prominent advocates.

Her father, Joshua Hottle, addressed her passing in a moving 23-minute livestream conducted in American Sign Language, expressing immense gratitude for the 18 years they shared and extending a message of forgiveness to the young driver involved. Her mother, Ketsi Hottle, echoed the deep grief of the family, sharing online, "I still feel Kaylee is with us."

Co-star Millie Bobby Brown posted a tribute on Instagram, writing that she was "devastated" by the loss. Fellow deaf actress Alaqua Cox, who worked with Hottle on her final film, shared her heartbreak, while Oscar winners Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur offered tributes honoring Hottle’s talent and impact.

Teri Devine, associate director of inclusion at UK charity Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), told BBC Newsbeat that Hottle helped "pave the way" for greater representation.

She described her as a "passionate advocate for the deaf community and deaf actors in Hollywood" and said she used her platform to "raise awareness and inspire others to drive positive change for people who are deaf or have hearing loss".

The Texas School for the Deaf issued an official statement mourning the loss of their senior student, emphasizing counseling and support services for her classmates.

Kaylee Hottle also appeared in several advertisements, including one promoting support for the deaf community in their pursuit of equal rights.

Though her career was tragically cut short, Kaylee Hottle leaves behind a pioneering legacy that proved visual communication and non-verbal performance can resonate across global audiences, breaking down barriers for deaf performers for generations to come.
